How We
Research & Test

Every number on this site is either sourced from a regulatory filing, verified on a live platform, or drawn from our account-tracking database. Here's exactly how we work.

The Core Principle

Financial publishing has an endemic credibility problem: most "reviews" are written by people who have never opened an account at the platform they're reviewing. Numbers are copied from other sites. Verdicts are backward-engineered from affiliate payouts.

We operate differently. The Daily Fiscal's analysis is grounded in first-party data collection, regulatory source verification, and ongoing account tracking. We update our data when facts change — not when a content calendar says to.

Our 5-Stage Editorial Process

1

Primary Source Research

We begin with regulatory filings — SEC Form ADV, FINRA BrokerCheck, quarterly financial statements, and official fee schedules. No fee number is used unless it is confirmed against an official source. For expense ratios, we verify against the fund's most recent prospectus. For interest rates and APYs, we check the live platform on the date of publication.

2

Account Tracking Database

We maintain a proprietary database of investor accounts across the platforms we cover. Account data is collected with explicit consent and anonymized before analysis. Specific cohort sizes referenced in our articles reflect the actual size of the tracked dataset at time of writing — for example, our brokerage comparison draws on 1,242 tracked accounts; our DRIP analysis covers 158 portfolios.

3

Platform Testing

For any platform we review, we open (or maintain) an active account. UI claims, mobile app ratings, and feature availability are verified on the live product — not from press releases. For time-sensitive claims (like customer service wait times), we document the testing date and conditions.

4

Fact-Check & Editorial Review

All articles are reviewed by The Daily Fiscal Editorial Board before publication. The review focuses on factual accuracy, regulatory compliance (FINRA Rule 2210, FTC disclosure requirements), and whether any claims exceed what the underlying data supports. Opinion and editorial commentary are clearly labeled as such — not presented as data.

5

Ongoing Verification & Updates

YMYL content (investing, credit, banking) is reviewed for accuracy on a rolling basis. When fee structures change, when APYs shift materially, or when regulatory guidance updates, we revise the article and update the updatedDate field. The "Last Updated" date at the top of every article reflects a genuine content review — not a cosmetic re-publish.

Verification Sources by Content Category

Brokerage & Platform Reviews

  • Expense Ratios: Fund prospectus (SEC EDGAR) and official fund pages — verified against Q1 2026 financial statements for Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab.
  • Commission Schedules: Verified on the live platform pricing page at time of writing. All "$0 commission" claims include verification that per-contract options fees are also disclosed.
  • Cash Sweep Rates: Verified via the platform's current rate disclosure, cross-referenced against public FDIC rate data where available.
  • SIPC/FDIC Coverage: Verified against the official SIPC membership list and FDIC bank search tool.
  • Security Features: Verified via the platform's security settings page and official help center documentation.

Credit Cards & Credit Scores

  • Rewards Rates & Annual Fees: Verified via the card issuer's official terms page (Schumer Box) at time of writing. Subject to change — always confirm before applying.
  • Approval Likelihood: Based on publicly disclosed credit tier targeting from issuer marketing materials and our tracked application outcomes database.
  • FICO vs. VantageScore Mechanics: Referenced against FICO's official scoring model documentation and Experian's published scoring guides.
  • Credit Bureau Reporting: Verified via issuer terms disclosures and cross-referenced against Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaint data.

High-Yield Savings & Banking

  • APY Figures: Pulled directly from the institution's official rate disclosure page on the date of verification. Variable rates are flagged explicitly as subject to change.
  • FDIC Insurance: Verified via FDIC BankFind Suite. Sweep network coverage is verified against the institution's official sweep disclosure document.
  • Transfer Speed Claims: Based on first-party testing of ACH and RTP transfer times between verified accounts.

Tax & Retirement

  • Contribution Limits: Referenced against IRS Publication 590-A/590-B and the current-year IRS inflation adjustments announcement.
  • Tax Rules (Wash Sale, RMDs, etc.): Referenced against the applicable IRS publication and, where relevant, against current-year Revenue Rulings.
  • Rollover Rules: Referenced against IRS Publication 575 and the official IRS 60-day rollover guidance.
  • State Tax Variations: Where state tax treatment differs materially, we note that the analysis reflects federal rules only and recommend consulting a local tax professional.

What We Do Not Do

Manufacture data.

If we reference a tracked cohort, that cohort exists in our database. We do not create hypothetical tracking numbers for illustrative purposes and present them as observed data.

Let affiliate relationships influence editorial verdicts.

Our "Top Pick" recommendations are determined before affiliate discussions, not after. We maintain affiliate relationships with some products we do not recommend as top picks; the relationship does not change the verdict.

Guarantee performance.

Historical fee comparisons, tax-alpha observations, and APY tracking describe past observations in a specific market environment. They are not predictive. Past performance of any tracked cohort does not guarantee future results.

Provide personalized financial advice.

The Daily Fiscal is not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, credit counselor, or tax professional. All content is educational and represents the editorial opinion of the author. It is not tailored to any individual's financial situation, risk tolerance, or tax circumstances. See our full Editorial Policy for details.

Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we correct them promptly and transparently. If a factual error is identified — whether by a reader, a platform, or our own review process — we update the relevant article, note the correction at the bottom of the page, and update the updatedDate in the page metadata.

If you believe you have found an error, please contact us with the article URL, the specific claim, and the source you believe contradicts it. We take all credible corrections seriously.

The Editorial Board

All articles on The Daily Fiscal are reviewed by the Editorial Board before publication. The Board's review function is independent of the author — its role is to challenge unsupported claims, verify that data matches cited sources, and confirm that YMYL content meets our compliance standards (FTC affiliate disclosure, FINRA Rule 2210 fair and balanced presentation requirements, and SEC educational content guidelines).
